Things to Do in Uxbridge, Ontario: A Local's Guide
Uxbridge is my home base, and it surprises people. It's under an hour from much of the GTA, yet it feels like a real small town, with a historic downtown and trails in every direction. Whether you're visiting for a day or wondering if you could live here, here's where I'd send you.
Hours, seasons and fees change, so check each attraction's website before you go.
Hit the trails
Uxbridge calls itself the "Trail Capital of Canada", and the Township of Uxbridge earns the name. Its network of trails runs through forest, farmland and the Oak Ridges Moraine. Hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners and cross-country skiers all have plenty to explore. Local trail maps are a great first stop.
Try it if: you want a weekend that feels like a cottage getaway without the long drive.
Ride the York-Durham Heritage Railway
The York-Durham Heritage Railway runs heritage train excursions out of Uxbridge's historic station. It's a hit with kids, train lovers and anyone who enjoys a slow, scenic ride through the countryside. Check their schedule for seasonal and themed trips.
Visit Lucy Maud Montgomery's Leaskdale
Before and after writing many of her famous books, the Anne of Green Gables author lived in Leaskdale, just north of Uxbridge town. The Lucy Maud Montgomery Society of Ontario preserves the Leaskdale Manse and church. It's a lovely half-day for book lovers.
Explore the Uxbridge Historical Centre
The Uxbridge Historical Centre (the Uxbridge Scott Museum) tells the story of the area's pioneer and farming roots, with historic buildings on site. Check the Township's website for current hours.
See the Thomas Foster Memorial
Just outside town, the Thomas Foster Memorial is a striking domed building. It was built by a former Toronto mayor as a memorial to his family. It's a favourite spot for photos and is open for tours at certain times of the year.
Stroll downtown Brock Street
Uxbridge's main street is lined with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Grab a coffee, browse, and catch a show at the historic Uxbridge Music Hall if something's on.
Get out to the farms
The countryside around Uxbridge is farm country. Depending on the season, you'll find pick-your-own, farm markets and fall festivals. Local tourism listings are the best way to find what's open.
Make it a Lake Simcoe day
Uxbridge sits between the city and the lake. Head north and you can be on the south shore of Lake Simcoe for an afternoon swim. See our guide to the best Lake Simcoe beaches.
